Success in St Ives: Derek Thomas MP backs the CE Bill!

In major news for the cross-party Zero Hour campaign, West Cornwall campaigners are celebrating following news that Conservative MP—Derek Thomas—is now backing the Climate & Ecology Bill!

Conservative Environmental Network member, Derek Thomas MP, has become the latest supporter of the Climate & Ecology Bill, joining an ever growing list of 160+ cross-party MPs and Peers.

The Cornish MP’s endorsement for the private member’s bill follows a community-driven campaign across West Cornwall that was coordinated by Zero Hour grassroots campaigners.

Lesley Bradley, from the campaign group, CE Bill Alliance West Cornwall, said: “We’re delighted that Derek Thomas is the latest MP to throw his support behind the CE Bill. Local people have been urging Derek to back this vitally important legislation since January 2021. In every corner of West Cornwall—farmers, business leaders, educators; plus faith, environmental and community groups—all recognise the need for joined up action on the climate-nature crisis. The CE Bill would help safeguard our future—with Derek’s support, it’s one step closer to becoming law.”

This is a fabulous outcome reflecting the hard work of on-the-ground grassroots campaigners—from local schools, nature friendly farmers and the Women’s Institute. Through perseverance, collaboration and community engagement, local people—and their MP—have joined together to call for urgent and effective climate-nature action in the form of the CE Bill.

Derek Thomas MP said: “Our response to the climate-nature crisis must be about seizing the future—and that’s why I’m proud to support this bold, new legislative plan. For my West Cornwall constituents, the CE Bill offers a chance to level up our once industrial community through new skills; green jobs; sustainable food production and cheaper energy for the long-term. The CE Bill should be embraced by decision-makers at all levels. It’s nothing to fear, and builds on the policies and commitments that the Government has already made. It calls for a joined-up plan to tackle climate and nature issues, hand in hand, and is exactly what’s needed. There’s no time to waste.”

To mark Derek’s support for the CE Bill, Zero Hour has produced a video (see below) exploring the Conservative MP’s vision and his work in the St Ives constituency to address climate and nature issues.

In this video, Derek discusses embracing opportunities to develop skills—bringing green jobs to the area—and how the CE Bill can bring this about.
